SUMMER TREAT YOUR SMILE WILL LOVE

Summer is finally here, and that means more time for families to swim and run outside with the hot sun beating down them. And what better way to cool off than with a healthy, braces-friendly treat the whole family will enjoy? If you have a child with braces who is getting annoyed when told they can’t eat certain foods that might ruin their brackets, then this is a treat that is perfect for them. While they might not be able to have hard or sticky foods like popcorn or caramel, they can have refreshing treats like watermelon, sorbet, and even delicious homemade ice cream like the recipe below—a delicious dessert every member of the family will enjoy!

3-Ingredient Banana Nutella Ice Cream

You’ll need:

  • 5 bananas
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ¾ cup Nutella
  1. Cut bananas into 1-inch slices. Place on a cookie sheet and freeze for 20-30 minutes until completely frozen.
  2. Transfer to food processor. Turn on, scrape down sides every 30 seconds. Process until mixture becomes completely smooth and looks like ice cream.
  3. Add nutella and vanilla. Pulse until combined.
  4. Eat right away or store in airtight container.

Although people with braces can have delicious treats such as this, they need to watch out for certain foods that are usually served at summer parties and barbeques. Corn on the cob is a treat at nearly every summer get-together and it can easily damage or break braces brackets. Chips (potato, tortilla, corn) can also wreak havoc on braces. Thankfully, biting into fruits such as strawberries, watermelons, or bananas will do no harm to your teeth. But be careful of some tempting fruits. Bite into a juicy, ripe apple without cutting it up first and you might be visiting your orthodontist a little sooner than expected.

While there are rules for keeping your teeth healthy during your orthodontic treatment, it will be worth it once its time for your braces and brackets to come off and a brand new smile is unveiled!
