MAKING HEALTHY AND BRACES-FRIENDLY CHOICES

Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month? This is a great time of year to reevaluate our dietary habits. This month, focus on making a positive change for your body and health!

When orthodontic appliances limit your diet, it might seem difficult to make smart nutritional choices. It’s tempting to stick to an ice cream meal plan, but having braces is no excuse for an unhealthy diet! There are plenty of delicious, healthy foods that are perfectly safe to consume with braces, good for your oral health, and nutritionally sound. Here are Dr. Hutta and Dr. Price’s suggestions for nutritious, braces-friendly foods:

OATMEAL

If you’re looking for a yummy, filling breakfast that’s safe for braces, oatmeal is a great choice. Oatmeal is soft, delicious, and packs a nutritional punch! If you want some extra protein in your breakfast, try adding peanut butter or almond butter. And, if you want to add some extra flavor, consider sprinkling in cinnamon or add a banana.

YOGURT

Yogurt is full of probiotics and nutrients. Plus, it’s perfectly safe to eat with braces. Just make sure your preferred yogurt isn’t full of added sugar.

STEAMED VEGETABLES

You might have to steer clear of crunchy, raw veggies for a little while since they can damage your braces. But that doesn’t mean you should miss out on fresh vegetables! Instead, try steaming your favorite crunchy veggies like carrots or broccoli—that way, you can still enjoy these vegetables without harming your orthodontic appliances.

HUMMUS

Made of nutrient- and fiber-rich chickpeas, hummus is a delicious way to get your protein when you have braces! Pair it with a soft veggie, like a bell pepper, rather than choosing a hard (and potentially braces-breaking) cracker.

SOFT FRUITS

Eating soft fruits is a great way to stay healthy with braces. Next time you’re craving a sweet treat, enjoy a banana, a sliced peach, or some blueberries. These delicious fruits will satisfy your sweet tooth and keep you healthy!

Even when you have braces, it’s so important to make healthy food choices for your body. Food is fuel for your body, and when you’re making good nutritional choices, you feel so much better.
