How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign can correct crowded teeth, gaps between teeth, and some forms of cross bites, overbites, or underbites. Your orthodontist takes a series of scans of your mouth to develop clear aligners designed to your mouth exactly. As your treatment progresses, the nearly invisible clear aligners are exchanged for different ones. Unlike traditional braces, which use archwires of increasing thickness to exert pressure on the teeth to get them into place, Invisalign uses a series of discreet trays that move your teeth into their desired position.
Beginning the process
Invisalign begins with the same first few steps as other orthodontic treatments such as braces. At an initial consultation, Dr. Hutta or Dr. Price will carefully examine your teeth and gums to ensure you are healthy. Your orthodontist will ask you about your goals and tell you about the process itself. This is the perfect time to ask Dr. Hutta or Dr. Price questions about the length of treatment, cost, and any potential lifestyle changes during Invisalign. If you are a good candidate for Invisalign, they will scan your teeth in the office and create a custom orthodontic plan.
Once created, you will be ready for your first fitting with your aligners. When you come in, your orthodontist may fit small attachments to your teeth. They will check that each aligner fits properly and give you your next few sets of aligners.
You’ll wear Invisalign aligners for 1 to 2 weeks before you start your next set. Once every 6-10 weeks, you will need an appointment with your orthodontist to ensure your aligners are successfully moving your teeth.
What does treatment feel like?
While Invisalign should never hurt, you may feel some pressure with each new set of Invisalign trays. The trays move your teeth in increments, so when you do put in a new set of aligners, you may experience a small amount of pressure. The pressure helps your teeth move to match the aligner. With every next set of aligners, your teeth get straighter and closer to their final positions.
To help ease any discomfort, you can put an ice pack on the sides of your jaw, use dental wax on any uncomfortable edges, or take an over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol. Consult with your orthodontist before taking any medication, as some could interfere with your orthodontic treatment. If you are experiencing pain with your Invisalign or symptoms such as bleeding, a swollen face, or pain while chewing, talking, or swallowing, contact us immediately.
How quickly do teeth move with Invisalign?
A common question, “How quickly do teeth move with Invisalign?” requires understanding how Invisalign moves teeth in the first place.
Invisalign clear aligners exert light pressure on your teeth, gums, and bones. This pressure from your dental aligners helps guide your teeth into improved positions. It tells your bone to grow or recede in specific places, changing how your teeth sit in your mouth. This may sound scary, but it is entirely safe during Invisalign or braces under the supervision of an experienced orthodontist.
Because your mouth is undergoing changes during Invisalign treatment, it is crucial that your aligners move your teeth at a safe, gradual pace. When you wear a new set of aligners every few weeks, you may feel that the amount of pressure is initially higher, but by the time you are ready to wear your next aligners, you will probably not even notice they are there.
When will you notice the results?
For the best results, Invisalign aligns your teeth slowly to minimize any discomfort and make sure your mouth is healthy. Day to day, it is unrealistic to see changes in your teeth, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t happening! Your teeth are getting closer to your dream smile whenever you wear your aligners. Although it varies from patient to patient, some patients may notice subtle changes around 10-12 weeks. At your regular treatment visits, your orthodontist will ensure your treatment is on track and let you know how your teeth are progressing.
What is the average treatment length?
Since a wide range of variables make your smile needs unique, there is no standard for treatment time with braces or Invisalign. Your Invisalign is specific to your tooth and bite issues and cosmetic goals. Be patient—your stunning smile is on its way!
Is there a way to get faster results?
When your orthodontist designs your plan, they use their years of orthodontic and dental experience to ensure you get the most effective, safe, and comfortable care possible. Trying to move teeth faster than they recommend could have serious consequences such as damaging your gums or even cracking or breaking a tooth. Your Invisalign must work at a gradual but constant speed to align your teeth.
Taking care of your oral health and listening to directions from your orthodontist will help your progress. Rest assured, your appliances are nearly invisible and removable during mealtimes. There is nothing to feel self-conscious about with this treatment, so don’t rush the process!
Taking care of your health
Be sure to brush your teeth in the morning, at night, and after each time you eat. Before every snack or meal, remove your aligners and put them back in after brushing and using dental floss. Wear your aligners at least 22 hours a day. Do not push off your orthodontist appointments; these visits to the office keep your smile on track. By taking care of your teeth and following directions from your orthodontist, you’ll ensure your teeth and gums are healthy, prevent staining on teeth or aligners, and ensure your Invisalign works smoothly.
Lifelong results
After Invisalign or braces, you can celebrate your hard work and beautiful grin! Your orthodontist will provide a retainer and retention plan. Since your teeth are prone to shift over time, wear your retainers as recommended to protect your new smile.
Do teeth move faster with clear aligners?
Several factors may impact your options and preferences when beginning orthodontic treatment. Along with appearance, effectiveness, and flexibility, time commitment is another key factor for patients curious about braces or aligners.
Other options: Smile Touch-Ups and braces
Healthy smiles take time! However, Invisalign treatment length will depend on the intensity of your treatment goals. For instance, we offer Smile Touch-Ups for patients with only minor needs, like shifting after not wearing a retainer. This option is not a comprehensive treatment, but it can lead to straight teeth and a confident grin in as little as six months. Braces may provide the best result for others—especially if you have more intensive needs. Ultimately, your teeth, goals, and health will dictate the length of time and whether braces or aligners are the best option.
